2nd Grade Highlights
Science of Sound

Each year in second grade, the students learn about science of sound! We perform science experiments, learn about vibration, how the ears work, and even how instruments are made! Through throughout the unit, students discover that vibration is the key to all sound. Click the links below to look at some examples of our vibration experiments!

Then students take all of their knowledge they have acquired through the unit and design their own musical instruments. Students research musical instruments and designs, gather materials, and spend time in th Big Flats Elementary Inovation Lab to create their own personal instruments. Students have created anything from their own version of a shaker or rainstick to a new kind of guitar or even invent their own kind of instrument.  Take a look at some of our fabulous creations!

Throughout the year, second graders also learn about music composition and associate it with their literacy skills. Students compose songs using familiar or silly words and link the syllables to rhythmic patterns we have been studying in music class. For example the word "Goldilocks" can also be written two-eight notes and a quarter note.

Here as some students compositions with rhythmic building blocks based on our story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The students created each building block!
